A Recliner Chair or simply a Recliner is a kind of massager chair or rather a massager armchair or sofa more specifically. It’s a kind of sofa that when an occupant sits in it, it helps him or her to recline or to lean backwards as well as raising his or her legs with ease. This kind of chair is also known as lounger.
The feature or the structure of this kind of chair or sofa is that it has a backrest that can be tilted back with ease when an occupant sits in it. And it often has a footrest that can be extended or lifted up with help of the lever attached to the side of the chair. Or it may also extend or rise if the backrest is reclined.
Modern recliners or most of the recliners these days often have an adjustable headrest, a lumbar support and an independent footstool that adjusts to the weight and angle of an occupant’s legs to give maximum level of comfort. These days there are some more additional features like heat, vibration and massage. There are also wheelchair versions of recliners.
There are some modern or advanced recliners these days that is structured to turn into a near supine position which as a result can also help an occupant to lie down flat or take a good sleep. This design is more frequently used these days. They are more common in trains, ships and planes.
There is also another kind of recliner chair called lift chair. It features a total standing-up system. They are commonly used to support elderly and paralyzed people or people with limited mobility.
Traditionally the recliners that are mostly common at homes are intended to be large and heavy immobile objects that doesn’t have the ability to move and thus has to be dragged or carried to move it elsewhere. But nowadays, there are recliners that feature thick padded leather or overstuffed fabric with casters attached underneath. Recliners like these are usually designed for medical setting. They are commonly found in hospitals, clinics or nursing homes. These kind of recliners also and often feature accessory hooks, a voluntary removable arm or a tray table.
There is also a recliner called Wall Hugger Recliners. The main feature of this recliner is that it reclines forward. This such design is commonly used in small apartments. The necessity of it is to save space. It helps an occupant utilize a gliding mechanism underneath the seat that pushes the bottom half of the chair forward so the back of the recliner never gets any closer to the wall. In this way it ensures efficient usage of limited space.
It is not known specifically since when armchairs like recliners were first used. But the word ‘Recline’ first came to use as early as mid-seventeenth century. And by mid-nineteenth century the word ‘Recliner’ came to use.
Probably sometime around in the mid-nineteenth century, the French introduced a reclining camp bed that could serve as a chair, as a bed and as a chaise lounge. It was portable and featured padded arms resting sides. The frames used to be made of steel. So we may guess that this was the time when recliners or chairs sort of like this first came to use.
