Upholstery is the work or art or technique of making furniture, especially seating furniture attached with cushions or padding’s of wool, feather, cotton, coconut fibers or foams, springs, webbing’s, coverings of leather, velvet or fabric of different colors and designs. This kind of work is often related to sofas and couches. But there are lots of other categories of furniture which also relate this useful work of art with them.
Now what actually is the difference between sofas or couches? There’s nothing to be confused about. They are actually synonyms of each other and nothing else. The use of these two separate terms just depends on which kind of English is your native tongue. The term sofa is used generally in the United Kingdom. Whereas the term couch is usually used in North America, South Africa and Australia. The origin of the word couch refers to meaning “to lie down”.
Sofas and couches furniture are meant for anywhere people need to have sufficient seating arrangements with utmost comfort and relaxation. So as a result, one’s own residence comes forward to be the topmost priority. Houses probably demand furniture like these more than anywhere else. At home, sofas or couches are usually placed in living rooms. It is a place at your home where you spend your leisure time, socialize with others or simply just relax, especially when coming back home after a day-long tiresome work. And as livings rooms are usually located right after the main entrance of your home and it is probably the only room where you can receive your guests from outside and make them seated, you do have to think about a furniture of such level of elegance and comfort.
Besides residences, sofas and couches are utmost suitable in non-residential or commercial places like offices, community centers, hotels, restaurants, bars, etc.
Even sometimes, sofas and couches are also seen or kept as garden furniture. Not such a regular thing. Quite unusual to many. But again, it’s not a rare thing. We do see sofas in many homes if they are having gardens. But as garden furniture should always be weather resistant, in that case sofas are not a very good option. But still if you wish to see a nice set of sofas at your own garden, better make sure that they are weather-resistant.
